Medication errors are one of the most common causes of preventable harm to pets. A few simple rules can prevent disaster.

The Golden Rule: Never Give Human Medications

Ibuprofen can kill a dog with a single tablet. Acetaminophen is fatal to cats. Human NSAIDs, antidepressants, and cold medications are NOT safe for pets. The only exception is when a veterinarian specifically prescribes a human medication for your pet with exact dosing instructions.

Follow Dosing Instructions EXACTLY

Give the prescribed dose at the prescribed times. Do NOT double up if you miss a dose โ€” skip it and resume the normal schedule. Completing the full course of antibiotics is critical, even if your pet seems better. Stopping early breeds antibiotic resistance.

Drug Interactions: The Hidden Danger

NSAIDs + corticosteroids can cause fatal GI ulceration. Multiple serotonergic drugs together can cause serotonin syndrome. Always tell your vet about all medications, supplements, and preventives your pet is on โ€” including OTC products. Keep a medication list on your phone.

How to Pill a Cat

Wrap in a small piece of pill pocket or soft treat. Crush and mix with a tiny amount of tuna or wet food (first confirm the pill CAN be crushed โ€” some are extended-release). Use a pill gun for difficult cats. Follow pills with a small syringe of water to ensure they go down โ€” cats are prone to pills lodging in the esophagus.

Recognizing Adverse Reactions

Mild and expected: drowsiness from gabapentin, increased thirst from prednisolone. Worrisome and should prompt a vet call: vomiting and diarrhea from NSAIDs, facial swelling or hives, sudden lethargy, any seizure. Emergency: collapse, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, inability to wake up.

Safe Storage

Keep all medications in original containers in a locked cabinet. Never store human and pet medications together. Dispose of expired medications properly โ€” many pharmacies offer take-back programs. Never flush medications down the toilet.

The most dangerous medication in your house is the one given to the wrong species at the wrong dose.
