Dosage Guide

Birds (egg binding): 50-100 mg/kg IM or slow IV. Reptiles (MBD): 50-100 mg/kg IM or SC. Administer slowly and monitor cardiac function.

Side Effects

  • Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • Tissue necrosis at injection site if perivascular
  • Hypercalcemia if overdosed

Important Warnings

  • !Must be administered slowly
  • !Monitor heart rate during IV administration
  • !Dilute for small species
  • !Injectable calcium is painful — use the smallest needle practical

Contraindications

Do not use this medication in the following situations:

  • Hypercalcemia
  • Digitalis toxicity
  • Ventricular fibrillation
