Dosage Guide

Anti-inflammatory: 0.5-1 mg/kg PO daily. Immunosuppressive: 1-2 mg/kg PO twice daily. Ferrets (insulinoma): 0.5-2 mg/kg PO twice daily. Always taper dose for long-term use.

Side Effects

  • Increased thirst and urination (PU/PD)
  • Increased appetite and weight gain
  • Muscle wasting and weakness
  • GI ulceration with high doses or long-term use
  • Immunosuppression (delayed wound healing, susceptibility to infection)
  • Iatrogenic Cushing's disease with chronic use

Important Warnings

  • !DO NOT combine with NSAIDs — high risk of GI ulceration
  • !Always taper the dose — never stop abruptly after >7 days of use
  • !Long-term use requires regular monitoring
  • !Use with extreme caution in diabetic animals (antagonizes insulin)

Contraindications

Do not use this medication in the following situations:

  • Concurrent NSAID use
  • Systemic fungal infections
  • Active GI ulceration
  • Diabetes mellitus (relative contraindication)
